ROLESVILLE, N.C. - The male North Carolina police officer captured on video slamming a female high school student to the floor has resigned.
The town of Rolesville released a statement on Friday saying officer Ruben De Los Santos submitted his letter of resignation Thursday.
According to the student who posted the video, the student thrown to the ground at Rolesville High School in early January was trying to break up a fight involving her sister.
The video Ahunna Akpuda recorded showed De Los Santos lifting and dropping a girl on her left side, then pulling her to her feet and leading her away.
Akpuda said two girls had been fighting, including the sister of the girl who was slammed to the floor.
De Los Santos was initially placed on paid administrative leave.
CBS affiliate WNCN reports that in his resignation letter, De Los Santos called the situation “overwhelming” for him and his family.
He wrote that he enjoyed working with the Rolesville Police Department but said “I must devote all my time to clearing my name and defending myself in this matter.”
“Officer De Los Santos attempted to break up the fight and, in the process, a student was taken to the floor,” Rolesville officials said in a release.
De Los Santos reportedly worked as Rolesville’s resource officer for three-and-a-half years.
“During Officer De Los Santos tenure with the Town, he was respected by his peers and the community at large. Officer De Los Santos was even selected as 2016 Officer of the Year for the Town of Rolesville Police Department,” said Rolesville Police Chief Bobby Langston. “The Town of Rolesville would like to thank Officer De Los Santos for his service to the community.”
