Oscar Pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp's relationship was at the center of a murder trial that captured worldwide attention.
On July 6, 2016, Pistorius, the legendary South African runner known as the "Blade Runner," was sentenced in the Valentine's Day 2013 murder of Steenkamp.
Reeva Steenkamp, a model, aspiring actress and law school graduate was fatally shot by her boyfriend, Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius, on Valentine's Day 2013.
Steenkamp, who spoke out on Twitter against rape and abuse of women, was shot four times in the pre-dawn hours in Pistorius' home, in a gated community in Pretoria, South Africa.
The legendary "Blade Runner," an example of courage to the world, leads the South African delegation as flag bearer during the opening ceremonies of the the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.
Oscar Pistorius met Nelson Mandela in October 2008 after winning three gold medals for the 100 meter, 200 meter and 400 meter sprints in the Beijing Paralympics, establishing a new Paralympic record in the 400 meters.
Reeva Steenkamp and Oscar Pistorius had only been dating a few months before her death.
"It was the story of a man who overcame incredible disability ... and then met an incredibly talented and beautiful woman. Fell in love. And then tragedy struck," said friend Jen Su.

With his blades, the double amputee would win races around the world and became an iconic symbol to his country -- and to the disabled community everywhere.
"He set the track on fire. It was the most amazing thing," said teammate Samkelo Radebe.

His former headmaster, Bill Schroder, says Pistorius was a "non-athlete." A knee injury forced Pistorius to start running at the track as part of his rehab.
Ironically, before her death Reeva Steenkamp was becoming active in speaking out about violence against women.
